There are two main areas to consider when looking for a piano; touch and tone.
TOUCH The Piano is a unique instrument. Unlike other string instruments (violin, guitar) your fingers don’t actually play the strings. Your fingers play the keys of the piano which then engage a very complex mechanism (piano action) resulting in a hammer striking the string. All the expression and subtle nuances of your playing gets transferred through this mechanism to that hammer and hopefully the end result is what you had intended. Needless to say the accuracy and consistency of the piano action is crucial to the sound quality, playability and overall enjoyment of the instrument, not only the day you get it home, but 5, 10, 20 years from now and possibly for generations to come.
TONE Once a hammer strikes a string, energy is created. How a piano captures that energy and how well it manages and maintains that energy has everything to do with the resulting sound that is heard. The size of the piano also plays a part, a 9 ft. concert Grand Piano vs. a 5 ft. baby Grand will have deeper lows and higher highs as is the case with a 52” upright piano vs. a 42” upright. The quality of the soundboard, rim and remaining structural and acoustical components; the material that they are made of, all make up the uniqueness of the piano and set them apart from each other. Of course the process of how these materials are assembled and interact with each other is an art form of its own.
